My Fair City
Local retailers are improving the lives of overseas producers, one cup of tea, one piece of jewelry and one cookie at a time.
MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT MILWAUKEE IS THE FIRST FAIR TRADE CITY IN THE US. But what does this mean exactly? In short, that the city has officially resolved to advocate fair wages, safe working conditions, and long-term economic and environmental sustainability related to the production of goods (particularly exports from developing countries) in an effort to empower the lives of the producers.

Milwaukee is working toward earning "Fair Trade City" status.
The growing popularity of the fairly traded products attests social approval of fairtrade ideas and the desire to support sweatfree shops and third world artisans.

Mayor Tom Barrett recently signed a measure
that designates Milwaukee as the nation's first fair trade city. That
means the city has numerous workplaces that will not accept products
made in sweatshops. They are notorious for having inhumane working
conditions. WUWM's Marti Mikkelson visited a store in Milwaukee's
Washington Heights neighborhood, where every item is fair trade.
